President Barack Obama shoots clay targets on the range at
Camp David, Md.,Saturday, Aug. 4, 2012.

The question is begged: Is this a genuine, un-shopped photo of President barack Obama shooting a shotgun?
I would say the answer is yes. I note that the trees are lush and green, which validates a summertime date. I also note that the president's shooting style needs some serious coaching, which you would expect. From such a low-resolution photo, I can only guess that the shotgun is a Beretta (based mainly on the styling of the stock and the recoil pad) and I further guess a 686 Sporting model, which would be a very good choice of skeet gun.
That smoke is coming out of the muzzle is no surprise. But what is the smoke rising from the barrel skyward? That would be smoke coming from the porting of the barrel near the muzzle. Porting is marketing fad of no ballistic utility, consisting of two or three rows of holes (about six per row) drilled into both sides of the barrel, just aft of the muzzle. Wild claims are made of their value, including, I suppose, how they might help pay down the federal deficit. But in fact, they don't do anything but separate a shooter from his money more expensively than an unported gun. My only observation is that there probably should be two plumes of smoke arising from the ports rather than one, but that may be a trick of the eye.
At any rate, I see nothing in the photo to indicate that it is illegitimate. I do wonder why it took the White House so long to release it (what, about a week?) when it's been lying around since August.
