Is Angela Merkel the most powerful national leader?

By Donald Sensing

The Preternatural Politician: Angela Merkel

A very good profile of German Chancellor Angela Merkel, who IMO may be poised to become the most powerful politician in the world.

Pretty much no political observer disputes that she is the most powerful woman in the world, but that may be setting the bar too low.

What does she have going for her? A clear sense of self, a nation with Europe's strongest economy, located in the smack-dab middle of the continent. Perhaps the only thing holding her back from climbing to the number one position (she has already passed Barack Obama, who now gives speeches insisting he's not weak) is that Germany is not a military power of significance on the world stage. While the caliber of its soldiers and the quality of its equipment are world leading, their numbers are small and underfunded to be any but a central-Europe power. But that's exactly where such a military is not needed.
