Will Ms. Thomas get the Helen out?

As the video shows, Hearst Newspapers' White House reporter Helen Thomas said on camera that Jews should "get the hell out of Palestine" and "go home" to Poland or Germany.

The question is whether Helen will be able to keep her job. WaPo blogger Greg Sargent posted today,

Asked if Hearst would keep her, Hearst Newspapers spokesman Paul Luthringer emailed me this:

We deeply regret Helen Thomas' remarks, which in no way reflect the views of Hearst Newspapers or its employees. Helen has expressed her own profound regret over the incident.

Asked again whether Hearst would keep her, Luthringer refused to go beyond this statement.

If Helen was an appointed figure of the federal government, such a weak, tepid response would immediately be decoded as meaning, "foot-butt-kick." But not necessarily in this case. I think it means that Hearst is waiting to see how this plays out. Since no one is expressing outrage except Republicans or pro-Israel conservatives, whom Hearst almost certainly does not care about, then I'm betting Helen's sinecure is safe.

Former White House press secretary Ari Fleischer understands the implication of her remarks in the same way I did. Tim Graham reports that Ari said,

"She is advocating religious cleansing. How can Hearst stand by her? If a journalist, or a columnist, said the same thing about blacks or Hispanics, they would already have lost their jobs."

To which Graham adds,

Thomas knows that she could never say the blacks should go back to Africa or the Hispanics should go back to Mexico, she would ruin her over-celebrated reputation as the "dean" of the White House press corps.

But Jews? Always a safe target for the Left. Always.
