In 2003, the guards were given permission to vacate the post when Hurricane Isabel came through. (Contrary to emails circulating then, they were not ordered to do so.) The guards declined to do so, but did determine that if winds reached 120 mph they would remand to the trophy room because it would be physically impossible to continue walking the post at those wind speeds. The trophy room is above the plaza and offers a clear view of the tomb. This proved unnecessary, however, and the guards continued to flank their post throughout the storm.

Update: Have learned that the bottom photo appeared on NPR's site,
and yes, it was taken this morning- update again: turns out the photo is genuine (not shopped) but the Old Guard has said it was taken in September,
not this week.
