An SS Division's first encounter with the Americans

By Donald Sensing

A stunning account was written by a German SS officer of the 17th SS Panzer Grenadier Division's first encounter with the American Army. It was in Normandy. The division was marching to fight the US Army formations that had landed on the beaches. The German officer was later taken POW. He had recorded his account of the action in a diary. A US intelligence officer seized the account. It was translated but was subsequently lost. This is the first time it has come to light.
