Egyptian Muslim Group Warns Charlie Hebdo: Don't Publish New Issue - NBC News.com

And not just any "Muslim group," it is an official arm of the Egyptian government, the Religious Edict Authority, known as Dar El Ifta.

In a statement, the REA said that publishing the new cover carton of Mohammed would be,

"... unnecessarily provoking the feelings of 1.5 billion Muslims worldwide who love and respect the Prophet." Millions of mainstream Muslims throughout Egypt, the largest Muslim nation in the Arab world, follow Dar El Ifta's religious edicts.

Dar El Ifta called on the "French government, parties and organizations" to reject the publication of the new issue, saying it "encourages religious division, deepens hatred and ignites conflict." The group also condemned recent attacks on mosques in Frances in the wake of last week's terror strike on the magazine.

Rather than the usual press run of 50,000 French-only copies, this issue will run three million copies in 16 languages.

Here is the cover, which I am posting here as my way of telling the Religious Edict Authority to get stuffed.

"All is forgiven" reads the headline, over a cartoon of a weeping Mohammed holding a sign that says, "I am Charlie."

Here is the big problem with the REA's proclamation. The NYT points out,

The blunt admonition, from a pillar of the mainstream Sunni Muslim establishment in the Arab world’s most populous country, recalled the pronouncements of Egyptian clerics in 2006 when cartoons depicting Muhammad were published in European newspapers, prompting a massive outpouring of protest — some of it violent — in many parts of he Muslim world.

Track that? The Muslim violence over the 2006 cartoons was prompted by Egyptian clerics. The REA not only knows this, it explicitly placed that possibility before the world again:

In its statement, Dar al-Ifta mentioned attacks on mosques in the wake of the attacks in Paris. And it said that the planned Charlie Hebdo cover would serve as an “unjustified provocation to the feelings of a billion and half Muslims around the world who love and respect the Prophet.” It said the newspaper’s cover “will give an opportunity for extremists from both sides to exchange violent acts that only the innocent will pay for.”

And what Muslims inclined to violence will understand this to mean is that Dar al-Ifta has basically issued a fatwa authorizing murder against Charlie Hebdo specifically and France generally. The REA of course will deny this, but the deeds will still be done.

But Muslims kill each other over these insults just as willingly as some kill us infidels.
