Kerry Says Chemical Arms Attack in Syria Is ‘Undeniable’ - NYTimes.com
WASHINGTON — Secretary of State John Kerry said Monday that the use of chemical weapons in attacks on civilians in Syria last week was undeniable and that the Obama administration would hold the Syrian government accountable for a “moral obscenity” that had shocked the world’s conscience.
And what might being held accountable be in the minds of the White House?
Officials say that a list of possible targets for a military strike has been circulating in the White House since late last week. The list, which the Pentagon originally prepared months ago for Mr. Obama, includes both chemical-weapons sites and broader military and government targets, depending on the type of action the president orders. If strikes are carried out, the targets would probably be hit by cruise missiles fired from Navy ships.Russia's government has all but announced it will veto any resolution for military action in the US Security Council, which would remove that fig leaf for President Obama to hide behind when he violates the Constitution (again).
Russia’s foreign minister, Sergey V. Lavrov, warned ... that any Western intervention would be a “serious mistake,” evoking the experiences of interventions in Iraq and Libya in particular.
“If someone thinks that, having bombed the Syrian military infrastructure and having left the battlefield such that the enemies of the regime will seize victory, that all this will end, it’s an illusion,” Mr. Lavrov told reporters at the Foreign Ministry in Moscow. “Even if such a victory is achieved, the civil war will continue. “Why doesn't anyone in Washington understand that?
