Aeronautically unexpected

By Donald Sensing

Two close calls. First, at an airshow at RAF Waddington, England.

Second, Barcelona airport last Saturday. Go full screen for best effect.

The second video's descending pilot is someone I can sympathize with. In 1977 I was flying a Cessna single-engine plane into Lawton, Oklahoma's single-runway airport with permission to land. While I was on final approach I heard the tower clear another plane for take off. The plane was already on the runway! When the other pilot asked for clarification, the controller stammered several seconds, so I pushed throttle, told everyone I was going around and did so PDQ.
