Brazil has some of the toughest gun control laws in the world.
It has 209,500,00 people, or 114,500,000 fewer than the United States. Yet Brazil suffers from 60,000 murders per year,
... most with guns. While some Latin American countries have higher per capita murder rates, in absolute numbers, Brazil is the deadliest place in the world outside Syria.In fact, 10 percent of the world's murders happen in Brazil.
Brazilians are far more likely to be shot to death than Americans, a more populous country where there are about 8,000 to 9,000 gun homicides each year.
Right now, Brazil actually has tough gun laws. If you want to own a gun legally these are the requirements:
— a fixed address
— proof of legitimate income
— no criminal record
— a mental health test
— proof you know how to handle a gun and shoot it
— evidence of why you need a gun. For example, a police report of an attack against you
Even if a prospective gun owner supplies all this information, the police can arbitrarily deny a request for a gun permit.
And still the American Left insists that more gun control laws in America will stop deliberate, planned, ideological-religious massacres like that in Orlando on June 12, 2016. Because, you know, that worked so well in France.
Bloomberg reports that weapons designed for military use, such as the Kalashnikov AK series, have been illegally flooding France over the past few years, with state bodies recording double digit increases. [Italics added]Oh, and Australia's tough gun laws have not worked out very well, either.
Chicago, Ill., has some of the toughest gun-control laws in the United States. Here is the result.

The strict laws in Chicago provably do not keep guns away from criminal gangs. After all, "the University of Chicago’s Crime Lab has learned that Chicago criminals do not acquire their guns from gun shops, gun shows or the internet" (link). Pardon me while I put on my shocked face.
The study examined and interviewed inmates in Chicago’s Cook County Jail who are either facing current gun charges, or have a background consisting of firearms related convictions.Here's a kicker:
The study learned that virtually zero criminals have ever used the internet or gun shows, because that method is easily traceable. It’s much safer for a criminal to acquire firearms on the streets where they’re harder to keep track of, and that’s most criminals method of choice.
Furthermore, University of Chicago Crime lab co-director, Harold Pollack, said that criminals “were less concerned about getting caught by the cops than being put in the position of not having a gun to defend themselves and then getting shot.”You know, kind of the like the patrons of the gun-free-zone Pulse night club in Orlando.
There are proven ways to reduce violent crime without resorting to more gun control laws that don't work. But the Left won't get aboard most of them because they are too diffuse, would seem racist to them, and don't centralize power enough. Vox explains "6 proven policies for reducing crime and violence without gun control." Summary:
- Control alcohol
- Put police on duty where crime is highest.
- Focus police attention on specific criminals and criminal gangs.
- Make it harder for kids to quit school.
- Teach fatherless kids how to become law-abiding men.
- Get rid of blighted housing either by repair or removal.
But that's too hard, I guess. Passing ineffective laws is easy and gets the glowing approval of the mainstream media. That the laws don't work isn't relevant except to garner the opportunity later to insist that even more and tougher laws are needed. because when leftwing policies fail, they always insist that there simply were not enough of them.
